Tribal Rites of Saturday Night

“Saturday Night Fever” was one of my favorite movies as a child. I loved the music, I loved the dancing, I loved how watching it was a family affair.

Of course, I was totally oblivious to the fact that the movie actually was addressing issues of sex, drugs, and racism. Disco! Bee Gees! John Travolta dancing!

Today, I YouTubed the first portion of the movie which I haven’t seen since I was 11. It’s amazing how the first 5 minutes of the movie capture the zeitgeist of the times. The symbols are now gone; Farrah Fawcett, John Travolta’s sex appeal, Rambo, funny-looking pants, discothèques, the Bee Gees…

It’s so cool.
