You’re So OUTRAGEOUS!
Everything is so “outrageous” in the Arab world. Religious differences? OUTRAGEOUS! Sex? OUTRAGEOUS! Thinking? OUTRAGEOUS!
You know, a woman taking a picture of herself naked a la Aliaa Mahdy is NOT outrageous. It’s none of your business. Or mine.
Having different religious beliefs from your own (or lackthereof) isn’t outrageous either. Again, it’s none of your business. Or mine.
Believing that the world should function under a different political system isn’t outrageous. Again, it’s none of your business. Or mine.
Finding it UNFAIR that ANYONE should be killed in a jail cell without fair trial is NOT outrageous, the opposite is.
When military men kill protesters in Tahrir, it is NOT outrageous to feel angry all the way here in Jordan. We are all brothers and sisters.
And it isn’t outrageous if a person decides to wear a miniskirt and waltz in the streets. Don’t look if it makes you uncomfortable. Avert your eyes. Stare straight ahead.
Really, Arabia, things are not as outrageous as we think they are. What people choose to do is none of our business. Let’s switch off the drama buttons in our heads.
