Steve is the unicorn that will put magic back into my life, now that the real Steve is gone.
(How wonderful is my brother Ghassan for getting me Steve?)

A few months ago, I came across a really brilliant line of postcards called Yislamoo.
Their theme is awesome; localizing geek culture and urbanizing very Arab culture. The design work is also impressive, with fantastic aesthetics that I haven’t seen much in local Jordanian products.
Unfortunately, they don’t have their whole line on their Facebook page, and their website is under construction, but here are some images of their postcards:

Brilliant! I can’t resist but buy a card every time I see a stall.
I’m not sure who’s behind the line, but if you do know, please share in the comments.
Make sure you support local talents next time you want to add a card to something :)

I woke up with a sharp craving for labaneh. Real labaneh, mind you, the kind that is hard, sour, and sharp.
Then come the other items. A glass bowl. Lots of olive oil. Finely diced tomatoes. Pita. A fork, a knife, a chopping board. Fresh spring onions. The naked flame.
The food is probably the best perk of being Arab. Oh, and the skin tone.

Can you believe that I made salmon tartare today? It tasted fantastic. Look, it even looks nice! I’m really, really proud of myself.

You don’t have to be a cultural connoisseur to see that the Arab world is culturally reacting to the Arab Spring. The music. The art. The writing. It’s a natural cycle of expression.
What you probably can’t do without a mind and an eye for culture is delve deep into the driving mechanics behind the current boom of creativity. But that’s why initiatives like ReDesign Arabia are founded. That’s why spaces like Darat Al-Funun are in existence. And that’s why you can’t possibly miss out on the current event happening at Darat Al-Funun’s “The Lab”: a ReDesign Arabia exhibition that explores the role of design, design thinking and designers in a post revolutionary Arab world.
Go with your thinking hat on, and bring your reading glasses. “Design Will Save the (Arab) World” is an exhibition that should happen more in your head.
