Lending Shelf: The Millennium Trilogy

I decided to read Stieg Larsson’s “The Millennium Trilogy” after I read countless reviews and had it recommended to me by a million engines.

The series consists of thee novels; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, were first published in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. They are set in Sweden, and are themed as an outcry against violence against women.

The books are definitely entertaining reads, though the author rambles on and on and on, often needlessly. The details are killers. I must have skimmed through one-third of each book.

Read them if you enjoy mysteries with dramatic plot twists. Forget it if you don’t feel like wasting a few good weeks on needless blabbering.

The Movies made from these books are cool, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets is just coming out in the the silver screen, I usually prefer to read the book before watching the movie version, but i don’t think am gonna read those, too morose and dramatic for me even-though I don’t mind drama, long lives high fantasy.

I watched the movie (in Swedish), which was quite good. I hear they are making an English adaption soon.

Well Dave, I liked the movies too, Quite honestly i hate these english remakes, there is another great swedish novel “Låt den rätte komma in” English “Let the Right One In” I read the book and I consider it the best vampire material I ever laid my hands on, and the swedish original movie version was majestic, it was like visual poetry, it even felt as if it was painted.

Now an english version is coming out and its even getting very excellent ratings, the trailer included a song by the Blue oyster cult, It really looks promising, but still I don’t think I will watch it, as the originals always leave this certain feeling, some kind of an after taste that remakes usually demolish :-)

I thought the first was compelling, am waiting to start the second one as a reward when I finish my work project.

I skimmed a lot too, I wasn’t fond of the male protagonist’s approach to women. He seems highly detached in relationships.

It has been, though a great study in the effect of sexual abuse.

good choice Roba. I’ve just finished reading “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and cant wait to read the 3rd novel. I heard the swedish movie is as good as the novels, but sadly cant find a version with English subtitles here…

I attempted to read the second book in the series. Wow- that book needs a really good editor. They should have cut 2/3rds out. I couldn’t take it and gave it away. I had already watched “the girl with the dragon tattoo” and it’s a great mystery, but not for everyone. It is very disturbing and violent.
