Urban Guide to Amman: For the Love of l’Weibdeh
Like I already told you when I shared the Jabal Amman piece, I wrote about my three favorite areas in Amman for Gulf Life magazine. So as to not bombard you with a gazillion words, I am publishing each area separately, having started with Jabal Amman.
Now it’s l’Weibdeh’s turn — the hill that has most definitely become my favorite.

The modern stone villas built into the hillside of the Lweibdeh district are small and tasteful, with none of the kitschy additions that mar much of the contemporary architecture in other parts of Amman. Breaks of pine trees offer the dwellings natural shade from the summer sun and scent the air with a delicious woody smell in the rainy winters. The neighbourhood’s little corner shops, family-run patisseries and earthy vegetable stores belong to a time before supermarkets and chain stores. There is a feel of authenticity about Lweibdeh: no frills, no props, no Ammani teenagers playing it cool.
The laid-back nature of this part of town has traditionally led to it being favoured by artists and the galleries that represent them. It’s not a bohemian art scene, though, but one of good taste and high culture. One of the art centres here, Darat AlFunun (down the hill from the Luzmila Hospital, +962 6 464 3251), or the “little house of the arts”, is perhaps the most beautiful spot in all of Amman. It’s actually three houses, all dating from the 1920s and set in beautiful gardens, at the bottom of which are the remains of a small sixth-century Byzantine church that the centre uses for open-air movie screenings and exhibitions. The house café, set amidst evergreen trees with sweeping views of the surrounding hillsides, is a fine spot for afternoon tea.
While Darat Al-Funun and the nearby Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (Hosni Fareez St, +962 6 463 0128), the country’s premier showcase for contemporary Arab and Islamic art with a 2,000-strong collection of works, represent the artistic elite, Lweibdeh is also home to many smaller, more experimental art venues. Notable among these is Makan (Nadim Al-Mallah St, +962 6 463 1969); housed in a small villa behind Al-Saadi Mosque, this alternatively minded venue often showcases work deemed too daring for more established galleries, such as Diala Al-Khasawneh’s 2008 exhibition The First Bra Boutique, which told the stories of different women and their first bras.
Once you’ve had enough of art, head for pretty Kuleyet Al-Sharia Street. Running from the Sharia Mosque to Paris Square, this is the heart of Lweibdeh. It is where you’ll find Al-Khal, a falafel shop that aside from the regular repertoire of deep-fried chickpeas also does Amman’s best mfaraket beid (our local version of an omelette). Automat, on Paris Square, is a great old manaqeesh snackbar. Running off the square (it’s actually a circle) is what’s known locally as Butchers’ Street, which is always heavy with the aroma of charred kofta. It’s also where you’ll find Abu Murad, which serves terrific arayes (minced meat) sandwiches.
Those with a sweet tooth are also catered for on Jabal Lweibdeh, particularly at Fairuz (Al-Sharia St), one of Amman’s older patisseries, which does top-notch millefeuille and eclairs. For a purer cocoa hit, head to Chocoholic (Al-Sharia St, +962 6 464 0888), a new coffeeshop serving an array of drinks with chocolate as the prime ingredient, as well as sheesha.

جبل اللويبدة في وسط عمان يشكل عالما من الاصالة والعراقة والفن الراقي
صغيرة الحجم أنيقة المظھر ھي الفيلات الحجرية الحديثة المبنية على سفح التل في حي اللويبدة، ولا تشوبھا تلك البھرجة المبتذلة التي تفسد الكثير من العمارة المعاصرة في أحياء أخرى من عمان. أشجار الصنوبر ترخي بظلالھا على المكان لتقيه حر الصيف، وتعطر الھواء برائحتھا الزكية تحت أمطار الشتاء. تتناثر في أرجاء الحي محلات صغيرة للخضار والحلويات يتوارثھا الأبناء عن الآباء، دكاكين تنتمي إلى زمن ما قبل السوبرماركت وسلاسل المتاجر الكبرى. ھناك لمسة من الأصالة تھيمن على اللويبدة، حي يعبق بأريج التراث والثقافة والجمال، وھدوء لا يعكر صفوه ضوضاء العابثين. إنه آخر الحصون الصامدة في عمان أمام التحولات العميقة في عصر العولمة.
الھدوء الذي يخيم على ھذا الجزء من المدينة جعل منه تلقائيا قبلة للمثقفين والفنانين، كما للمعارض والمتاحف والمسارح ومراكز الإشعاع الثقافي. لم يتحول المكان إلى مشھد للفن الفوضوي أو الغرائبي، بل ذلك النوع من الفن الرفيع والثقافة الأصيلة. ومن أبرز المراكز الفنية فيه دارة الفنون [ 1] على سفح التل مقابل مشفى لوزميلا، واسمه يدل على فحواه، ولعله أجمل بقعة في عمان كلھا. تتألف الدارة من ثلاثة مبان تراثية تعود إلى العشرينات من القرن الماضي تحيط بھا حدائق جميلة، إحداھا تضم آثارا لكنيسة بيزنطية صغيرة تعود للقرن السادس للميلاد، وتقام فيھا الآن معارض وأنشطة فنية وعروض سينمائية في الھواء الطلق. ووسط الأشجار دائمة الخضرة يقع مقھى الدارة، وھو مكان راق يحلو فيه تناول شاي العصر مع إطلالة على التلال المجاورة.
وبالقرب من دارة الفنون يقع المتحف الوطني الأردني للفنون الجميلة [ 2] شارع حسني فريز، وھو المعرض الأھم في البلاد للفن المعاصر إذ يضم مجموعة تزيد عن 2,000 من الأعمال الفنية المھمة. وإذا كانت الدارة والمتحف يمثلان النخبة الفنية، فإن منطقة اللويبدة تحتضن أيضا الكثير من المراكز الفنية الأخرى الأصغر حجما والتي تنحو أكثر نحو الفنون التجريبية. ومن أبرزھا مركز مكان [ 3 شارع نديم الملاح، ويقع في فيلا صغيرة خلف جامع السعدي، وھو يعتبر مساحة فنية تجريبية مفتوحة وتعرض فيه أعمال جريئة جدا بالنسبة لغيره من المعارض التقليدية، مثل معرض الفنانة ديالا الخصاونة لسنة 2008 بوتيك حمالة الصدر الأولى والذي يحكي قصص وتجارب نساء مع حمالة الصدر الأولى في حياتھن.
لا تقتصر معالم حي اللويبدة على مراكزالفنون فقط، فليس بالفن وحده يحيا الإنسان. وشارع كلية الشريعة الجميل، الممتد من مسجد الشريعة إلى دوار باريس، ھو قلب اللويبدة، وفي ھذا الشارع ستجد الخال [ 4]، وھو مطعم فلافل يقدم بالإضافة إلى سندويتشات الفلافل اللذيذة المقرمشة، أشھى مفركة بيض في عمان، وھي تعتبر النسخة المحلية من العجة. أما مطعم اتوماتيك [ 5]، الواقع في دوار باريس، فھو محل رائع يقدم المناقيش وقد ذاع صيته منذ الخمسينات والستينات من القرن الماضي. ويتفرع عن الدوار شارع يعرف ھنا بشارع اللحامين، وھو يعبق دائما برائحة الكفتة المشوية الشھية التي تثير اللعاب، ويوجد في الشارع أيضا مطعم أبو مراد [ 6] الذي يقدم سندويتشات لذيذة من اللحم المفروم. ولا يبخل جبل اللويبدة على عشاق الحلويات، فيوجد فيه محل فيروز 7] شارع كلية الشريعة، وھو واحد من أقدم محلات الحلويات في العاصمة الاردنية، ويقدم أفضل المعجنات والحلويات على الإطلاق. أما من يريد أن يتذوق ألذ وأفخم شوكولا، فلديه مقھى شوكوھوليك [ 8 شارع كلية الشريعة، وھو مقھى جديد يقدم مجموعة متنوعة من المشروبات تحتوي جميعھا على الشوكولا، إلى جانب تقديمه الشيشة طبعا.

علامتنا التجارية تحمل بعدا اجتماعيا فھي مرتبطة بالإبداع والثقافة، واللويبدة ھي أفضل مكان يمثلھما في عمان.
ما ھي أماكنما الثلاثة المفضلة في اللويبدة؟
متجر جو بدو، ومتجر جو بدو، ومتجر جو بدو. نحن نمزح. نختار في الحقيقة دوار باريس، ودارة الفنون، وشارع الخيام.
ما مدى شعبية اللويبدة في اوساط الشباب؟
ليس كثيرا. فأغلب السكان من المسنين الى جانب الفنانين. لكن مع افتتاح مزيد من المقاھي، نأمل في جذب شباب عمان، فھذا ھو الشيء الوحيد الذي ينقص اللويبدة.

Not the most historic of cities, and often overshadowed by its neighbours Damascus and Cairo, Amman has plenty to offer the visitor. Roba Al-Assi, a native Ammani and vocal city cheerleader, sheds light on the places she loves.
