It took me twenty-four fricking years to discover that my hair goes beyond its usually fine, limp natural style. Twenty-four years of trying with curlers, mousse, “fair”, pins, and serums. Twenty-four years until one day, my brother Omar, three years my junior, whose hair is slightly curly, looks at me and says, “You know Roobee, my hair isn’t curly either, there’ a secret to it, and that’s just to not brush it for a few weeks after you shower.”

Omar as a child, center, illustrating that he really wasn’t born with curly hair.

I didn’t believe him, of course. How can simply not brushing your hair work better than all the specifically engineered curling products? But I thought I’d try anyway, knowing that whether I brush my hair or not, it will straighten out anyway.
Day one goes by, it still looks the same. Day two is a little messier, but still flat. Day three was a hot day, and so I skipped the towel drying, and shit… look… I discovered that it isn’t just not brushing it, it’s also not flattening it out with a towel.
Case in hand, my hair, most of my life:

You get the point. It usually ends up like that in like 30 minutes no matter what I do with it.
What I can get it to look like now:

Of course, it’s very different from Omar’s hair, maybe cause his is shorter. This “no-effort” look also takes me like four times more effort than the regular look, which is kind of funny. I understand that those of you blessed with more lively hair are probably making fun of me in your heads. May you one day try super dull hair.
Oh, wow, I haven’t written a post like this since January, ’07: Geek Chic. I should update that post, I got at least 4 new pairs of glasses since then! :)
