Aramram: Digitizing Ammanite Popculture

With Aramram, damn, it works well. Their website is like a little briefcase of people, sounds, and sights of Saturdays gone by. Of products, of places, of characters, of walls. I don’t know how the hell it’s possible, but browsing through this website actually makes me feel nostaligic. And I was in Amman a second ago. Oh, another second ago. More seconds as I type. Still in Amman. Freaky.

It’s actually the first time I check it out since its launch (though they’re relaunching the design today).

A few videos that caught my eye:

Aro, a graffiti artist:

Sklakhi:

Check out their cool videos here.

They have a launch party today at Darat Al-Funun at 8:00. Check it out as well. Here’s the Facebook events page.

My hair can curl up, yours cant

It took me twenty-four fricking years to discover that my hair goes beyond its usually fine, limp natural style. Twenty-four years of trying with curlers, mousse, “fair”, pins, and serums. Twenty-four years until one day, my brother Omar, three years my junior, whose hair is slightly curly, looks at me and says, “You know Roobee, my hair isn’t curly either, there’ a secret to it, and that’s just to not brush it for a few weeks after you shower.”

Omar as a child, center, illustrating that he really wasn’t born with curly hair.

I didn’t believe him, of course. How can simply not brushing your hair work better than all the specifically engineered curling products? But I thought I’d try anyway, knowing that whether I brush my hair or not, it will straighten out anyway.

Day one goes by, it still looks the same. Day two is a little messier, but still flat. Day three was a hot day, and so I skipped the towel drying, and shit… look… I discovered that it isn’t just not brushing it, it’s also not flattening it out with a towel.

Case in hand, my hair, most of my life:

You get the point. It usually ends up like that in like 30 minutes no matter what I do with it.

What I can get it to look like now:

Of course, it’s very different from Omar’s hair, maybe cause his is shorter. This “no-effort” look also takes me like four times more effort than the regular look, which is kind of funny. I understand that those of you blessed with more lively hair are probably making fun of me in your heads. May you one day try super dull hair.

Oh, wow, I haven’t written a post like this since January, ’07: Geek Chic. I should update that post, I got at least 4 new pairs of glasses since then! :)

Ammanite talents: Yazan Rousan versus Aziz Maraka

Last week, we went to Yazan Rousan and Autostrad’s concert at Jara, and this week, we went to Aziz Maraka’s at the same place. The conversations around us were the following:
“Yazan Rousan kicks ass. He really is awesome with his audience.”
“No… Aziz is much better, his music is much more creative.”
“No, Yazan is really funny! I love Yazan!”
“But you feel like Aziz is a real musician…”

And so on and so forth. Yazan and Aziz, two of our most popular local acts, both singing in Arabic, and both quite creative with their music.

Personally, I like them both equally, and I think they are different from one another. But people always seem to be comparing them.

So, what do you think?

De-degitizing the digital

Our Backyard by you.

Courtsey of my mother and brother Hisham, who organized, printed, stenciled, and watched-over this mural to make sure it got done so prettily. You can see it from the back of the house if you’re driving by, but of course, the best view is from the garden :)
