The mission: Sell one week of the Ammani experience to German parents

After about one year after my arrival in Jordan my parents came up with the idea, that it would be nice if they dropped by some time in early april. The plan emerged easily; my father just told my mother that he intends to visit me in the beginning of April, so she asked him whether he already applied for his passport (we normally do not have passports if we don’t travel a lot). They applied for the passports and now they check for flights. I can tell you that is going to be the longest time my parents ever inspected my personal home after I moved out from their place about 8 years ago.

Since I am here already for some time I already feel quite at home in Amman. Cosy home, stable work, familiar places, loyal friends, every now and then a detour. But now put yourself in the position of a tourist again: what would you show visitors of the city? Roman theatre, Citadel, Downtown? Al-Ma7atta ? Jabal Amman and Webdeh? Even Abdoun? Let’s say you have one week to fill with program and you can’t go to Petra, Wadi Rum or Aqaba. Mission impossible?

    hmm..
    look up some local events that may be happening this week..
    if on a weekend , you can go to the dead sea, madaba and ajloun
    fheis has beautiful views in this time of the year so just driving from amman to fheis is nice byitself with the beautiful views..
    that’s all i could hink of..
    hope it’s useful :)

    Hertzliche willkomen…..

    I would add the Dead Sea to the list then, even if its just to go to the public beach to soak your feet in the “healing sand”… besides its only 1:30 hr drive to there and the weather is perfect this time of the year..

    Besten Dank, Bobby :)

    @Noura:
    Thanks I think I will take them there. I was also thinking of offering them the complete Roman experience in Jerash. But actually I was more looking for some of Amman hidden jewels such as for example the House of Poetry.

    1:30h to dead sea ?

    i used to go there by 30 min lol, its just here , 5abt el 3asa !

    Ajloun is a good option (if the weather is hot, Ajloun will be cool)

    Al Hussien Gardens (Royal Car Museum)
    Downtown (eat 3arayes in Shahrazad or Zahret Al-Madaen)
    Jabal Al-Qal3a (facing the roman theater)
    Madaba (Jabal Nebbo & the mosaic things) Madaba is not considered far btw, its closer than Jarash

    There’s a little town called Om al-Rasas which I think is better than Madaba. Go 30km south of the airport and about 10 km east to find it. (Convenient for a morning trip if you have an afternoon airport drop-off.)

    Inside Amman, Darat Al-Fanoon is a nice place to spend an afternoon enjoying their gardens.

    Darat al-funun
    Fakherredine / Hashem
    Madaba/ Dead Sea/ Jarash

    @all:
    Great! thanks a lot for all you input. At the beginning my parents will probably just be overwhelmed by the experience of Amman in general. But then I will create a little program (including your tips).

    Rula,
    that honors me :) As this is one of my first blogging experiences I am glad to have such a welcoming and receptive audience. Thank you!

    phil,

    great recomendations above, I would add “Wild Jordan”, “rfc – upon programme”, and “books @ cafe” close places to your home.
