Judging a book by it’s cover…

Truthfully, I’m all for judging books by their covers, and here are my favorite 5 covers from ASME’s Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years:

You can read more about these covers and see the other 35 winning ones here.
Two Andy Warhols… I’ve always loved Andy Warhol, but I’ve been loving him even more recently thanks to his chemicals theory.

Which are your favorite covers?

I really like #15, the Harper’s Bazaar cover from 1965. I’m really into the whole retro-futuristic 1960s aesthetic, and this cover is a perfect example of that. Love it!

  • hisham

    nice post i like :)

  • Ayyob

    My fav two are:
#8 Esquire “Oh my God we Hit a Girl”
#29 (tie) Fortune “Rising from the Ashes”

  • Seneferu

From your pick I take the new yorker. The national geographic no, if only because it’s been too overexposed. The esquire is also nice.

  • J.P. Ellan

am just wondering, are you atheist? are there atheists in the Arab world?

    Nice blog anyways.

yours from Uncle Sam of America.

the rolling stone cover is really cool and weird..although i find it GAY..but it’s really cool…love the post..awesome work as always roba

  • Husams

J.P. Ellan, Are there atheists in USA? Theists are everywhere, atheists are everywhere, it’s a state of mind not of a region.

    My favorite covers are
#8 Esquire “Oh My God—We hit a little girl,” ‘Americans way of being peaceful’.
#27 Entertainment Weekly ‘those angels don’t deserve to be boycotted for saying a true word!’.
In addition to your favorite covers and how I personally see them, the new Yorker ‘But its still there’ , national geographic ‘all eyes are equal’ , Andy Warhol interview ‘loyalty to achievement’ , time, is God dead? ‘the solo signal of silence’.

national geographic June 1985 is my undisputed one. I used to have a big poster for this afghan girl. It’s amazing!

By the way, she is a woman right now!

Talal, oh yeah, the 60′s were awesome!

    Hisham, great.

Ayyob, yeah I generally like type-based covers, Ithink they’re interesting.

Senefru, I agree that it’s over exposed. I didn’t know whether to choose it or not…

J.P. Ellan, uttering what Husam’s said, of course they’re are atheists in the Arab world. I am not an atheist, but I am agnostic.

Ali, I like the Rolling Ston’es cover, I thought it was “different’.. a little risque..

Husams, lol, yeah.. I guess I like the new yorker one graphically rather than conceptually.

Adel, great article! Thanks for the share. really enjoyed the picture of her.

What about the classic cover with a man pointing a gun at a dog with the accompanying text:

“Buy this magazine or we will shoot this dog”

BTW Roba, are you going to see the biopic “Factory Girl” about Warhol’s muse, Edie Sedgwick?

I like #6 New Yorker, because it reminds me of Rothko, and the #12 Time, because I like the title “Is God Dead?”.

    Thanks for sharing!
