One of today’s headlines: “Will men start wearing leggings?”
For the love of god, please do not let this trend take off! I mean, man, that is just… UGLY.
(and seriously, that’s one of today’s headlines on the Yahoo! homepage)
On a different front, one of the BBC predictions for 2007 is the upcoming death of denim:
“Jeans, in their seemingly endless incarnations – bootcut, hipster, wide-legged, high-waisted – have been THE High Street fashion success story of recent years. But that’s about to end, says Hadley Freeman, fashion writer on the Guardian. A combination of customer fatigue, overexposure and, frankly, a lack of any new denim styles left, means jeans, while still a wardrobe basic, won’t generate anywhere near the excitement that they have for the past half decade,” says Freeman. At the end of 2006 you could already see customers and retailers experimenting with alternatives, from leggings to shorts over cashmere tights.”
NO! Not jeans! COME ON.
The day is full of good news, huh?

I’m a 23 year old metrosexual male. I personally think leggings are a wonderful concept at that! I think females need to stop whining and feeling akward about men who want to wear leggings! “Gender is nothing more than a physical construct.” It has nothing to do with what sex they are. Both men and women can and do actually percieve the world in similar ways. A man doesn’t always like to wear heavy, thick and dark apparel. We too enjoy the luxuries of lfe like silk and nylon. Clearly a man that is well built and assertive like most men, but perhaps is better groomed and enjoys wearing leggings doesn’t mean he is any less of a man. A man or woman is determined based on how kind, helpful and positive we are toward others, not what we eat, wear, sleep in, or how we act like outside of these pathetic gender roles created my society that something thought up as being the ONLY way. It simply doesn’t work that way. Individuals are very complex living beings with mixed emotions, new developing feelings about ourselves and others, and our own need to be distinctive among others. In conclusion, open-mindedness and the ability to let change occur is not a punishment but a gift to express oneself and enjoy life on higher and newer levels. Judge not another and they won’t judge you!
Now for all the men out there. Give it a try if you choose. Fear of rejection means you are dependent on what others think and want of you.

I’m a strong, fit, hardworking guy(carpenter) and I’m wearing ‘leggings’ this fall because they’re elegant and comfortable. My girlfriend thinks they look good on me, and I could care less about negative attitudes folks like to have! Leggings/tights are UGLY? To me, our physical “architecture” as human beings, men AND women, is surpassingly beautiful–what’s REALLY ugly in clothing is the Clown-Pants ‘crotch-at-the-knees’ shapeless “prison-style” trousers that poor sods seem to think is a badge of “ManHood” these days. I don’t have to prove my ‘manhood’ to anyone..Bless you ALL-you can wear what you feel “right” in-Live and let Live…just be happy with who you are…let’s keep our opinions to ourselves!

Leggings are so fucking incredibly ugly. They were oh-so-ugly on women, let alone man! NO WAY!
Hopefuly this fashion dies, cause it’s horrifying and it makes any outfit look extremely cheap, as if the person bought their clothes from a Dollar Store. ANYONE WITH EVEN JUST A LITTLE BIT OF STYLE WOULD KNOW THAT LEGGINGS, FOR MEN OR FOR WOMEN, ARE A BIG NO-NO!

Oh but, I’d like to say, I don’t disagree with you rich, the low-rise pants on guys (meaning the ones that start at their knees and you can see their entire underwear) are indeed the gayest and ugliest thing a guy could wear. Yes, even gayer than thighs/leggings.

I prefer tights and mini skirt instead of leggings – it so cool to wear mini skirt with tights and boots – it look nice on men also I think men and women clothes should mixed at dept stores instead of per dept… that would make lots easier.. dont you think??? im straight and already wearing black opaque tights and cord mini skirt that look very nicely and very coool!!

I personally own printed and solid leggings and tights. Yes, tights! If you go to Wal-mart they sell Athetic Works performance legigngs, shirts, and shorts; Target, they have Mossimo loungewear leggings for sleeping, Big 5 has Underamour, and one or two others; if you go to Sportmart or SportChalet you will find NewBalance, Nike, Reebok, and maybe others. I bought the Loungewear in Downey, CA Target. I bought the UnderArmour in Big 5 in Downey, Walmart in Pico Rivera also has Athletic Works performance apparel. It is big business. They charge $18-$50 a pair. Go to Nike.com and they go from $35 – $100 depending on what you want. Yes these are actual stores for men! Some of the women shops even have printed black or white. I even saw some from LuckyBrand Jeans someone was wearing. I recall seeing a young AA man with his girlfriend. I walked by and turned for a second and he was wearing black tights. I almost didnt notice. He was dark skinned and was wearing black tights with white socks. Also I was going to a Best Buy nearby and saw a guy wear leggings with his sandals and basketball jersey and shorts. Looked cool. I worn my Nike brand to the mall and no one said anything. I just worn it with athletic shoes and a windbreaker. Go buy some. Try Activskin.com and tights-for-men.com. There are others. Leggings are like fit sweats and heavier than tights however the sports tights are like fit sweats.

This whole topic seems heavily divided. On occaision, I will wear tights and a skirt when I am driving a distance. Since I’m not in a position to shave my legs, I usually layer the tights to cover my dark leg hair. Knowing that probably 80% of the male population (meaning of those who don’t wear, that is) will likely take issue with it, I usually will ‘revert’ back to the current conventional attire during the day.
Recently, I did a drive along the east coast; I thought I would ‘experiment’ a little, so I chose colors and styles that made sure that there was no question to anyone what I was wearing. I stopped at various convenience stores and 24 hour stores (actually ended up being Wal-mart as they were the only larger-type stores that were open that late – was literally, an all night trip after work).
At Wal-Mart, I walked right into the store and browsed numerous departments, selected a few items went to the front, paid and left. Depending upon the level of apparant nervousness of the cashier (all but one Wal-Mart was female), I would ask if that was their first time seeing a guy dressed like that; it seemed like 75 to 80% answered ‘yes’, but followed up with ‘do what you want to do’. Probably 15% of the cashiers weren’t even aware of what I was wearing – that seemed to depend upon if there was someone in front of me and/or if I had a cart (buggy to some) with me.
One thing I did observe was the casual ‘walk-by’ by some employees – followed by a conversation with another associate; it seemed that by the use of various forms of expression “dag…dang…you’re kiddin’…” and so forth that the discussion was about me and my attire. By and large, this activity was limited to men. Once, I had this one young man (a Wal-Mart employee, probably early 20′s) come up to me after I walked away from the checkout (and was heading toward the door) and say something like ‘man, don’t tell me that you are wearing a skirt….” To be honest, I hadn’t expected that kind of response, so I hadn’t prepared an adequate retort, I simply walked out – good thing for them that I wasn’t a “secret shopper”.
I never had a female chastise me like the one male associate did- there were a few who seemed to interact just enough to complete the transaction and nothing further. There were two ladies who were interested enough to engage in a little more lengthy dialog; they were from two vastly different age groups, too.
At one walmart, while I was walking back to my vehicle, this car with two young ladies in it slowly pulls up beside me; the window rolls down. The driver proceeds to tell me that I remind her of her dad- curious, I asked in what way. Her response was that my gotee was the same as his…yada…yada. She asked if she could take my picture- to which I declined (for obvious reasons). I then asked them if that was their first time seeing a guy in a skirt- they seemed to genuinely not notice [yet, she noticed my face looking like her dads...from behind...hmmm]. I never had any other customers interact with me at all.
Apart from the guy at Wal-Mart, one morning, the crew at McD’s really seemed to not know what to think or make of it. I probably should have suggested that a picture would last longer, but would rather them not take one (sure, they could pull stills off of the security cameras, but hey, the quality is not the greatest.) Perhaps I’ll be on UTube walking through Wal-Mart!
One thing I do have to say is that the managers and assistant managers seemed to be the most dead-pan strictly business. At one BK, the cute hispanic girls in the back seemed a little to gigly for that time of day.
In convenience stores, oblivion seemed more the norm; there were a few who claimed that they hadn’t even noticed; one of whom, however, once she realized the distinction spoke very supportively about it; she liked my diamond patterned tights.
While not entirely scientific, the results were interesting.
In case you are wondering, I enjoy wearing tights for several reasons: 1. I like the feel of the fabric; the sensation of a pair of pantyhose against a set of cool bed sheets is almost electric. 2. I like the compression; it kind of feels like my entire lower body is inside someplace warm and tight. (I have a touchy knee; it never bothers me when I wear.) 3. I like the look. I am completely straight and married (4 kids) unfortuneately, this is not something I can share with my wife as she is probably one of the most narrow-minded people I know.
Peace,
dubster

this is so wild that ive stumbled on to this thread. i’m a black guy who wears tights/leggings. i used to cycle but i dont anymore.I must say there is nothing as comfortable in my wardrobe like my tights. I get chided by my girlfriend(who likes them) sometimes all in good fun though. ive only had one negative experience which resulted in me being charged with assault(broke a guys nose, lol). tights are practical and offer superb freedom of movement. I will say the leggings pictured are horrendous. they should be either loose or form fitting. i prefer and own athletic tights:duofold, and pearl izumi. Oh, for all the closed minded types who think that its wise to approach or say something ignorant to a man in tights.BE CAREFUL..lol….holla

Oh no – women in these leggings are ugly and manly. Oh what the hell – the world is gone mad.
Stupidity – share some space, men want to wear everything too. It’s no fun letting women wear men’s clothing and not sharing it back. So don’t be stupid. Either pants (including leggings) are for men only, or everything is for everyone…

Personally I think leggings would look great on men. But pathetic and judgemental people wouldn’t accept it in todays society un fortunately. I mean whats wrong with wearing just plain black leggings (i don’t think men should be wearing printed ones, thats abit gay) under a pair of nice denim shorts with a nice top? Absolutely nothing, thats whats wrong with it – nothing! People just need to learn to accept people more. It don’t make you gay just cos your wearing leggings, you can buy mens sports wear leggings anyway so whats the problem, i’m straight (as a ruler) and I think it looks good. People, just let others do what they want, I mean you can’t stop them.
