Humane or not?

One of the headlines today making news in tech sites is “First Person in U.S. Convicted for Spam E-mailing“: Forty-five year old Jeffery Goodin was found guilty of running a running scam that fooled users into giving out personal information. E-mails that Goodin sent out made users believe that they were cooperating with a legitimate business when in fact they were not.He is to be sentenced on June 11th of 2007 and faces up to 101 years in prison.

101 years?!

Yeah, sure, spammers do deserve to suffer for a few years, but ONE HUNDRED AND ONE YEARS?

I personally think that’s a little too much.

What do you think?

    Burn them at the stake!!

He was convicted of wire fraud and hacking as well. It doesn’t specify how much money he stole from people (or how much financial damage he did) but I can see how 101 (maximum) years might be appropriate. Don’t worry, though. That’s the max possible sentence for each of the 11 convictions(spamming was only 1 of the 11 charges), added together. I’m sure the actual sentence will be less than that, maybe a LOT less. Unless the judge ordered Penis Enlargement pills from him and they never showed up.

Jeffrey Brett Goodin, 45, of Azusa, was found guilty Friday of running a “phishing” scheme that tricked people into believing they were giving personal information to a legitimate business. Prosecutors said Goodin then used the information to go on a spending spree.

Says he was convicted of witness intimidation too.

Perhaps the judge’s pills did show up, but with adverse side effects. ;)

Are you kidding? I’d rather consider 101 years as complimentary for felons such as this old turd. He should rather be slapped with a sentence that ends similarly (if not of equal caliber) to that of saddam’s and his fellow subordinates. These criminals steal and destroy lives by the hundreds. You cannot even imagine what the consequences are of having to loose your identity, credit history and social security in the U.S.

    Hi Roba,

I think it’s too harsh and so unfair to put “a spammer” in prison forever..

Even if the spam resulted in losses of indivisuals’ or corporate money, it’s still unjust..

I’d give him 1-10 years depending on the losses and damage he caused :P

This kind of agressive punishment results in many questions arising in one’smind.. What the hell is going on in this world?? is all of them!

Cool blog, I’d like you to visit my new one..

Is there any crime on earth that deserves 101 years in prison?! A life sentence means 25 years! I mean if you kill four people you’ll be sentenced to 100 years in most countries! This is insane!

Wth!!! Why is this!! They should decrease the amount of the period ‘coz it’s not that fair!

  • Tomer

As Craig said, it’s much more than just spam. Fraud and Hacking as well.
In my eyes, spam should just be a fine (a very big one) not years in prison…

He’ll be sentenced to a 101 years but he will probably only serve 101 days.

  • Sam_carpenter

A lot of folks dying around the world, and we’re caring about how many years …101, he is convicted by his country law.
by the way more than 101 person dying every day in Iraq

    Omar,

Life without parole in the United States means spending the rest of your life in prison – not 25 years. I’m frequently disgusted at the way European justice systems (particularly the British, Dutch, and Germans) mete out 20-25 year sentences to perps who have committed some of the most hideous murders I’ve ever read about. But hey, countries that abolish the death penalty often tend go soft on sentencing altogether.

In any event, this guy is not going away for anywhere near 101 years for what he has done.

A hacker gets sentenced for 101 years, yet a pedo gets 2 years in jail, what this world is coming to?

I suppose people are just scared from the unknown
