I love it when…

…I find groups where people are passionately arguing whether online inter-gender interactions are haraam or not. They even have a list of online modesty rules and stuff:

  • Lower Your Gaze (even on Facebook)
  • “LMAO” and the such are inappropriate, even if they are acronyms!
  • Excessively browsing through profiles, spending hours scoping out
“brothers”, “sisters”, and collegues is still wrong! The one look rule
still applies, even if they are pictures!
  • No poking of the opposite gender. That’s just wrong.

And my favorite:

  • While we have incorporated a little humor in this group, we are still serious about this!!!

WALAH?

This is hilarious … ! I guess others will follow (qiran.com and naseeb.com) and then someone will invent a Shariah based browser, that will help people “rediscover the web”. And it will have a Sunni version, a Shiite version and a 7asheesh version!
It will detect any facial pop-ups and pop them immediately after the first look. After that they’re covered in a Burka

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all! Thanks Roba!

It’s not okay. even if you ARE using an fake ID and using a no-proxy service.

and there’s “there must be more than one man and one woman in any chat room at any given time”

  • Sami

    Salam,

Islamically, it is true that there are etiquettes that should be observed while members of different genders speak (this is established in the sunnah of the prophet (pbuh)). Whether or not you observe them is your choice, but the fact remains that these rules do exist. However, if you want to observe the correct rules you should get off Facebook and stop complaining.

    Wait a minute…..facebook is a dating service?

I thought it’s made to connect friends from old school, college or work together…..damn I’m so misinformed.

    The one look rule
still applies, even if they are pictures!
One look rule ? Sounds like same rules you hear in a ….. what’s the word I’m thinking of?

  • Insightfully “Brilliant”

    Brother Sami,
Thanks a lot for your insight on Sunna teachings and for bringing to our attention the fact that the prophet (may peace and prayers by upon him (for translational accuracy) had clearly set the rules of gender interaction over facebook.
On the other hand, your last sentence does not make any sense at all, and hence it is not a surprise that you did not find the humor in the above set of rules.
