On that thing called Facebook

I guess that one would think that I’d be the first person to become acquainted with social networking websites, because as a friend told me yesterday, “You are always online anyway” (which I am not!) Yet for some reason, my relationship with these things tends to be the similar to my relationship with TV, and that is one very much along the lines of “Huh? Really? That’s happening?”
I discovered Facebook exactly three days ago (thanks to Ammar who created a Jordan Planet Group on Facebook, so go ahead and join!)
I started looking through Ammar’s profile, where I found that my brother was apparently his classmate, and from my brother’s profile, I discovered the profiles of family friends, and from their profiles, I discovered the profiles of my friends, who had the profiles of my old friends, and so on. The really amazing thing is that by the next day, I was communicating with people I haven’t talked to since the SIXTH grade, and not only is that amazing in regards to time, it’s also amazing because none of us live in the country we met in (which was Saudi Arabia).
I would have definitely not recognized them if I “ran into them” or saw their pictures anywhere. I remember Sarah R as the smart girl in 6th grade, very thin with very curly black hair and Sara B was short with a bob; add 10 years and make up, they’re women. I remember Lamees as this little cute kid who happened to be my best friend’s neighbor, and her picture shows a sophisticated looking young woman. I also found a lot of my classmates from highschool. Heba, my best friend from the 7th and 8th grade, sent me a message on Facebook accusing me of “ignoring her for seven years.” (huh?) I remember the rest of my schoolmates as unkempt nerdy girls in ugly, drab uniforms, but their pictures on Facebook are so nice that I can’t help but think about many of them, “Oh, my God, she looks so good now!”
It’s really quite startling… Sort of like going to sleep for ten years and waking up to find that everyone has grown.
