Firefox 2, with a cherry on top

I just downloaded Firefox 2 and naturally, I love it. There’s a new Web 2.0-ish shiny glass like look that looks more sophisticated than before, and I love how they only “refreshed” the visuals, rather than changed their positions like the IE team did with IE7, which makes for a terrible user experience, at least for myself. I mean, what’s the stop button doing on the far right corner of IE? Are they serious?

They also have this awesome spell check built into the actual browser, and although I’m rather proud of my spelling capabilities, it is really great for typos and slips, and it gives the Word processing vibe. Most of my extensions work on Firefox 2, save for a few which I mostly won’t need now anyway as they are built into the new version. The only thing I will miss is the Highlighter extension.

The only thing I dislike about it is that the close button for each tab is placed on its tab, rather than at the end of the tab-bar, which sort of sucks as I batch close consecutive tabs often.

Meanwhile, the rather unaesthetic cake you are looking at was actually sent to the Firefox team by none other than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team as a congratulatory gesture on the occasion of the launch of Firefox 2.

Touché.

Long live Firefox!

Here’s the download page to Firefox 2, which is packed with new features including a visual refresh, session restore, enhanced search, improved tabbed browsing, and even a spell check among other stuff.

Among the features I love in FF2 is the map add-in (you highlight the address in the webpage, right click -> show map! ) perfect if you live in the U.S.

Also, that you can choose add-ins like FireFTP, which is helpful for those who FTP to a server every now and then!…. Very good FireFoxiiiii! IE7 sucks!

It’s taking a while for me to get used to the close button on each tab. I don’t necessarily dislike it; it’s just different from what I am used to.

The Microsoft IE team can suck wind. They deserve to play “catch up” after making us suffer through IE 5-6 for all those years. Long live Firefox: a browser of the people, by the people, and for the people!

    Hey there!

Thought you might want to know about this; there’s a walk around to make Highlighter and other extensions work with Firefox 2, just do the following:

    1. On the extension install site, right-click and download the XPI file to your desktop.

    2. Open the XPI file with WinZip and extract “install.rdf”.

    3. Open “install.rdf” with Notepad or any other editor.

    4. Look for

    1.5.0.*

    and replace it with

    2.0.0.*

    5. Save the changes, and re-pack “install.rdf” into the zipped XPI file.

    6. Save the zipped file, then drag it to Firefox’s addon’s manager and install.

This might not work for all extensions, but it’s fine for Highlighter! have fun :)
