Yesterday we went to watch a show presented by quite-popular Lebanese drag queen Bassem Feghali, and although I usually wouldn’t enjoy such a thing, it was actually quite entertaining. The dude is actually funny and uses a lot of political humor in his shows, not to mention all the smart punches at the Arab music scene.

Below is a little video taken by yours truly. For those who don’t know who Bassem Feghali is, he’s a Lebanese guy who got famous for his impersonations of famous Arab singers. All the “women” in the video are actually Bassem dressed up. It’s also his voice singing the entire time. He does a pretty good job at it too I think…

    first time we saw him on TV, doing Fairouz, we thought
    it’s an actual woman doing this!

    I love Basem!! I remember that night at Naher il Fonoon, it was hilarious…

    I was quite surprised that you referred to him as a drag queen, most of the Arabic people are not familiar with the term, and when I use it, they are quite confused!

    Gosh this IS funny… but at the same time, I felt disgusted when I went to this show last year… the sexual insinuations are a bit too much… some of them made me very embarrassed.. I did not even laugh at some of them fearing that people around me would know that I understood all the nasty comments he made!

    Oula, hmm, there weren’t mant sexual undertones this time.. a lot about Israel and Olmert.

    Crossdressing and homosexuality is haram in Islam. It is also considered indecent and coarse in the traditional Jordanian setting.

    After reading the subject and comments, I just wanted to say write this comment to avoid any reader mistakingly thinking that this is normal in Jordan.

    So, You spent 31 or 26 JDs to see a drag queen in Ramadan?
    Ramadan is supposed to be a month of spirituality, you shouldve used that money to feed the lots of homeless people in the eastern side of amman, but now ur money are goin towards buying the drag queen more wigs and wax. Sad!

    P.S I am not against anyone going to a buffet or anything in ramadhan, but if ur spending on something you dont believe in in the first place ..thats working against urself too..
