One of the very first thing I learned in design school is “Practice safe design- always use a concept”. Although thinking of a concept can be an extremely tedious process, I have also learnt that it always pays off- even in shoe design.
This is one of my favorite Nike designs is the Air Max 95, first released in 95 as the name suggests, and which has become one of the most popular favorites.
Its designer, Sergio Lozano, drew inspiration for his concept from the ultimate masterpiece- the human body – and modelled the shoe accordingly. The midsole of this sneaker represents the spine, the graduated panels are the muscle fibres, the loopholes/straps are the ribs and the mesh is the skin.
I believe this shoe took sneaker design to a whole new level.
